Sharda Sinha Singer

Celebrated folk singer Sharda Sinha, who received the Padma Vibhushan honour, was hospitalised to AIIMS-Delhi after her health deteriorated. Known as the ‘Nightingale of Bihar,’ the 72-year-old musician is reportedly undergoing treatment in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to reports from the local media.

She wed Braj Kishore Singh, a Begusarai native and Bihar Education Service official, in 1970. Sadly, a brain haemorrhage claimed the life of 80-year-old Braj Kishore on September 22 of this year.

She once disclosed in a television appearance that her husband was acutely aware of her love of music. He convinced her mother-in-law to let her follow her love when they were married in 1970. Her career was greatly influenced by his steadfast support.

Over the past two days, Sharda Sinha, who has provided vocals for more than 62 Chhath songs—devotional songs sung during the Chhath festival—has been ill. Regretfully, on Saturday morning, her health declined even further.

Mahamrityunjaya Jaap, a potent healing chant, and special rites are being conducted. Special prayers are being offered for the singer’s recovery at the Mahadev Temple and the Thave Ma Bhavani shrine in Gopalganj, a location that is strongly connected to her. Scholars and priests in the area have also prayed for her health. Social media has been used by fans to post their prayers and hopes for a speedy recovery.
