At the age of 83, Mahendra Singh Mewar, a member of the esteemed Udaipur royal family, passed away on Sunday. He spent the final 10 days receiving care at Ananta Hospital in Udaipur before passing away. The Mewar family’s close aide Kamalendra Singh Panwar has verified his passing. The political and regal legacy of Mahendra Singh Mewar is extensive. Throughout his career, he was active in both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has also held the position of Member of Parliament.
Sushila Kumari, a princess from Bikaner and the granddaughter of Maharaja Ganga Singh and Sardul Singh’s daughter, was the wife of Maharana Bhagwant Singh. Mahendra Singh has had a diverse political career. On a BJP ticket, he won the 1989 Chittorgarh Lok Sabha election. By 3,97,056 votes, he defeated Congresswoman Nirmala Kumar in this election. But in 1991, he unexpectedly ran again from the same congressionally-supporting constituency. However, Jaswant Singh Jasol of the BJP defeated him this time. He was elected as the Congress candidate from Bhilwara in 1996. but lost to the BJP’s Subhash Chand Bahediya. A string of victories and setbacks characterised his political career, making him a significant player in local politics.
The passing of Mahendra Singh Mewar has affected the local political landscape as well as his family. His political legacy is being continued by his daughter-in-law Mahima Kumari and son Vishvaraj Singh. Vishvaraj Singh is a Nathdwara-based BJP MLA. Mahima Kumari, however, is a Rajsamand MP. When Mewar passed away, the whole family was at the hospital. As a result, the Mewar region experienced a sense of sorrow.
For the local population and the royal family, his passing signifies the end of an era.
