On October 17, 2024, the eagerly awaited Malayalam movie “Bougainvillea,” which was helmed by Amal Neerad, made its theatrical debut. Alongside Jyothirmayi, the film stars Kunchacko Boban and Fahadh Faasil. Reactions to the film are flooding in as crowds of people visit theaters, expressing a mixture of admiration and curiosity for the plot and performances.
In “Bougainvillea,” Dr. Roys Thomas (Kunchacko Boban) and his wife, Reethu Thomas (Jyothirmayi), have a catastrophic accident that leaves Reethu psychologically unstable, and their lives descend into chaos. Reethu’s preoccupation with the bougainvillea flower becomes a key symbol for her fragmented mental state as psychological stress increases in tandem with her more erratic conduct. The cases of visitors going missing in their locality are similar to this plot.
The story
The storyline of “Bougainvillea” is simple. While studying in Kerala, a young woman who is the daughter of a Tamil Nadu politician disappears. As the inquiry progresses, the authorities learn that a number of other young women, all of whom are in their twenties, have vanished under same circumstances. Reethu, played by Jyothirmayi, emerges as the primary suspect. Reethu suffers memory problems and finds it hard to recall anything. The movie felt a little long, despite its excellent craftsmanship. Dr. Roys Thomas, played by Kunchacko Boban, is presented as a kind and loyal husband. The basic query still stands: To what degree, if at all, is Reethu connected to the disappearances?
The Performances
Regarding performances, Jyothirmayi, who portrays one of the main characters, Reethu, is the focal point of the movie. Maybe the impact of her honest and powerful depiction as a trauma victim is enhanced by the fact that she hasn’t appeared on television for more than ten years. Her performance is emotionally compelling and simultaneously familiar and new to the audience, making her presence feel invigoratingly fresh.
Roy’s internal conflict, as he struggles to protect his wife while simultaneously worrying that there might be more to her than he knows, is masterfully portrayed by Kunchacko Boban. The audience is kept in suspense by the question of whether her entire character is a façade. Considering the actor’s skills, viewers won’t be surprised by Fahadh Faasil’s superb performance as ACP David. Shrinda and Veena Nandakumar play other noteworthy roles, and Sharaf U Dheen gives a good performance, albeit it seems to outshine his previous work, such as in the movie “Varathan.”

The verdict
The film “Bougainvillea” provides its viewers with much more than just a skillfully written thriller propelled by some outstanding performances. The movie tells a novel tale about the human mind, examining its hidden nooks and crannies as well as what it can withstand and change after going through mild to severe trauma. All things considered, the cinematic experience of “Bougainvillea” stays with you long after you’ve left the theater.
