Chennai Rain: School and College Closures in 4 Districts

Chennai Weather Update:-

Chennai is under a red alert due to the possibility of heavy rains today, according to IMD‘s forecast. Furthermore, a warning in the orange color for tomorrow indicates that there may be further heavy rain. The red alert for today is based on the likelihood of exceptionally strong downpours in Chennai.

A low-pressure system over the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal has moved northwestward, raising air pressure in the area, according to a report released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday.

Advice on Working from Home for IT Professionals

The government has advised IT workers to work from home in the impacted areas from October 15 to October 18, 2024, because to the heavy rain warnings that are in effect.

A red alert has been issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) for certain areas of Chennai due to the possibility of up to 20 cm of rain in a single day.

CM Stalin Notifies and Sends Out Relief Teams

The Chief Minister gave an order to IT companies to allow their staff to operate remotely during the peak weather period on Monday after chairing a meeting at the state secretariat.

In order to guarantee prompt rescue efforts in the event of flooding, CM Stalin further instructed officials to pre-deploy NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) units in susceptible locations.

In order to formulate and carry out flood relief plans, the government has also requested that all field authorities work with district administrations in coordination.

Travel Cancelled Owing to Bad Weather

Eight flights scheduled on October 15, 2024, have been canceled, according to an official announcement. Among these flights were:

At 7:05 AM, Akasa Air departs Bengaluru for Chennai.
Akasa Air departs at 1:00 PM from Andaman to Chennai.
At 3:20 PM, IndiGo departs New Delhi for Chennai.
Oman Air is expected to arrive in Chennai in the morning from Muscat.
Likewise, four planes from Chennai were canceled on their way out:

7:45 AM: Akasa Air to Andaman
Bengaluru via Akasa Air at 1:40 PM
8:40 AM Oman Air to Muscat
IndiTravel by night to Delhi.

Forecast for Rainfall in All Districts

IMD has forecasted significant rainfall in a number of districts, including Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, and the Nilgiris. The state capital of Chennai is predicted to see heavy rains on October 15 and 16.

On October 14, unusual weather patterns resulted in significant rainfall throughout a number of Tamil Nadu districts. The districts that are most likely to be affected include:

A Warning to Fishermen

It has been advised that fisherman stay out of the water until October 17 due to choppy waves and heavy gusts.
