“On October 27, 2024, renowned menswear designer Ratul Sood, who was headquartered in Kolkata, passed away. He was playing golf at a city club when he had a heart attack. He was unable to be saved despite attempts to take him immediately to the adjacent M.R. Bangur Hospital. The event took place between 11:30 and noon.
“Ratul was renowned for his skill in custom tailoring, frequently fusing Indian sensibilities with Savile Row craftsmanship. His business, ‘Sood,’ which was situated on Park Street, across from the Mocambo restaurant, was well-known for its modern design and flawless fit. Ratul considered his training at the esteemed Savile Row Academy to be a career-changing event.
In addition to his career, Ratul was a well-known personality in Kolkata’s social circles, respected for his keen, fascinating style and love of sports, particularly badminton and golf. Additionally, he received recognition for his ability to design apparel for both men and women by fusing his skills with those of his wife, Komal Sood.

“Aside from his career, Ratul was a kind and humorous individual who supported everyone around him. His ability to create clothing that felt unique was a direct result of his sincere interest in people. He was able to determine whether you liked soft cuffs on your pants or an additional ticket pocket on your blazer. According to his friends, he was a modest yet strong individual who spoke his opinions in a flawless manner. Ratul maintained his modesty and approachability in the face of success, qualities that aren’t often connected to the fashion industry.
The death of Ratul Sood is a loss for Indian fashion as well as for all those who appreciate the craft of subtle, well-considered craftsmanship. Those who are lucky enough to own his works will carry on his legacy through their wardrobes. Despite his brief life, his impact on Indian fashion and his conviction that elegance is and always will be an art form will go on.
